BASIC INFORMATION
The TV2-117 turboshaft engine along with the VR-8 main gearbox was developed in 1964 as a power plant for the Mi-8 medium-load helicopter designed by the Mil Design Bureau. It became the most popular helicopter in the world. The engine was mass-produced until 1997.
PRODUCT QUALITY
About 23,000 TV2-117 engines were produced; their total time in operation exceeds 100 million hours.
Versions of the engine:
The superior design of the TV2-117 engines triggered the development of several versions that are still used all over the world.
The TV2-117A engine features several improvements over the basic model; in particular, soft coatings in the compressor are substituted by tougher deposited coating on the steel parts of the stator;
The TV2117AG engine features carbon sealing in the second bearing support; such sealing is added to TV2-117(A) model engines as they are repaired;
The TV2-117F engine – a small lot was supplied for the Mi-8FT helicopter and certified in Japan under the US airworthiness standards (FAR-33 ). Its main distinctive feature is the availability of emergency power;
The TV-117TG is an experimental engine equipped with fuel controls that was designed to operate on liquefied propane/butane, gas condensates, gasoline, kerosene, diesel fuel (summer or winter fuels as well as any mixture thereof). The engine is designed for operation on Mi-8TG helicopters in remote areas of Siberia, the Arctic, the Antarctic and other regions with an extremely harsh climate. This versatile engine becomes especially valuable in wartime, when fuel availability, quality and timely delivery may be a problem.
A number of transport engine prototypes based on the TV2-117 was developed during the 60s and the 70s.
SERVICE AND SUPPORT
All versions of TV2-117 engines and VR-8 gearboxes may be readily overhauled by the Klimov Company.
